What are God's plans for you?

I wanted to share this message I spoke on at Youth Sunday about 2 months ago.  While I was writing this it really helped me to realize how everything does fall right into place if you let it according to God's plan.  I hope that this can touch someone and make them realize how much God is doing in their life even if they don't see it right now.  Get prepared to run the race of life!

Running the Race for God!

I wanted to start off with this verse from Luke chapter 6 verse 38 “The amount you give will determine the amount you get back”. I try to apply this verse in every aspect of my life whether it’s in school, work, Church, extra circular activities, with my family and friends, or with different people I come into contact with every day.  We should start every day with an attitude to give it our all and know that in the end we have done our best.  A lot of you probably know me as the runner or you might as the dancer, or even that pageant girl!  God has blessed me in many different ways and continues to strengthen me in ways I couldn’t imagine.  He has given me trials and tribulations along the way, he’s taught me that it’s ok to win and lose some, for it you won everything you did then you’d never appreciate what it truly feels like to win.  He’s taught me that losing at some things is ok for if it wasn’t for the times that I’ve been at the bottom I don’t think I’d appreciate hard work and dedication like I do today.
In everything that I have been a part of throughout high school as well as into college, I always try to do my best no matter what.  Also something I have gradually learned throughout my youth or mostly as I was in college is “what is the purpose of what I’m doing” or who am I trying to impress, etc.?  I’ve learned that its God, he’s the one I am trying to impress and everything that I do should be to glorify him.  So he should always be who we think about first and he should be the sole purpose for everything that we do.  Somebody once told me that when we wake up in the morning the first thing we should ask is “what would God want me to do today, or what would God want me to wear today”?  So we should put him first every day and do everything with the intention to please and glorify him.  He blesses us in too many ways not to return the favor.
So a few things about me!  Dancing has played a huge role in my life, since many of you know my mom is a dance teacher, so not dancing was never an option.  I’ve had so many wonderful opportunities as a dancer that most people don’t experience if they have never danced or performed.  One of my favorite parts of a being a dancer is the feeling you get when you entertain on a stage in front of a thousand people.  That’s a feeling that is so unreal and almost magical in a way.
As for my pageants, probably a lot of you get the wrong impression of pageants from “Tata’s and Tierra’s and the numerous things you hear on the news.  But me personally I have gained so much from the few that I’ve competed in.  I always like to use this pageant quote “Don’t just wear the crown, but be the crown” and I think we can all relate that to our Christian lives “don’t just act like a Christian but really be one”.  As a queen you hold so much responsibility, leadership roles, caring, and giving qualities, elegance and charisma that you should display whether you’re wearing the crown or not. The crown shouldn’t be a reason to display these qualities you should always display them, and I’ve learned as I’ve grown in my walk with Christ that although it’s important to go to Sunday school and do those Christian things it’s most important that as individuals we speak with God and pray daily.
So a few days ago as I was sitting on the beach by myself while all of my friends were in class, thinking about what to speak on today I looked out into this beautiful ocean that God has created and realized that life is here today and gone tomorrow like the waves of the Ocean. It’s so important that we take all the opportunities that come our way and we listen to the ocean because if you listen closely, you can hear God speaking to you.
As I was talking to Matthew and asking him what he’d like me to speak on today, he mentioned some of my recent college experiences or whatever I felt the need to speak on.  But I wanted to share a quick experience that I encountered last year.  Some of you may know that I competed for the title of Miss Greater Wilmington, which would ultimately carry me to compete in the Miss NC Pageant, which is every young girl’s pageant dream!  I worked hard for months; practicing my talent over and over again, staying up to do date on politics and potential interview questions, working on my speech, because we all know if you’re from here you have a southern accent, and working hard in the gym preparing for the swimsuit portion of the pageant.  I prayed for weeks preparing for the pageant, asking the Lord to give me the strength and courage I needed to do my best, and that he would use me in the way he intended.  So of course the night comes and I place first runner up which is a big achievement but isn’t taking home the crown.  I was devastated for weeks, had no motivation to do another pageant, and really had a hard time understanding why I had worked so hard and didn’t win.  And then a few weeks later, I received the answer.   I heard about a casting call for a new ABC Family Movie “Teen Spirit” that was going to be filmed in Wilmington and I decided to go for it!  I attended the casting call, made a few connections, and within a few days I had been called back and asked to play a part of the “Posse” which was a featured extra role.  I got the opportunity to work on the set for a little over a month and really made some great connections and learned a lot about the movie industry.  It was such a unique experience and honestly one of the coolest things I’ve ever been a part of.  So I thought I would share with you this wonderful eye-opening experience that taught me patience.  That although sometimes we don’t understand the Lord’s doing and why he does it if we are patient and put all of our trust in him, we’ll eventually see a reason and purpose for everything.  Had I won Miss Greater Wilmington I would have never had the Teen Spirit opportunity.  I think this verse applies to this very example! In Romans chapter 8 verse 28 “ We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”  I think one of the most valuable things I’ve learned as I’ve grown in my walk with Christ is to have patience, to know that he has a plan and purpose, and although I may not see it now, he will reveal my answer in time.

One of my favorite quotes by Donald Miller is It is always the simple things that change our lives. And these things never happen when you are looking for them to happen. Life will reveal answers at the pace life wishes to do so. This is how God does things.”  So if there is anything you take from my message today, its Patience, to be patient and listen to the Lord he holds the keys to all the doors that you’ll open.
But today I not only want to speak on patience but also on perseverance and share my story as a runner.  As many of you know I did a lot of competing in track and cross country races throughout my middle and high school years and still run some today.  But I learned from running that life’s a race.    That in order to get into Heaven we have to run this race with God as our coach along the way.
In Hebrews Chapter 12 verses 1 through 2 “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus.”  As a runner you have to practice at what you do like any other sport, you can only get better the more you practice and you must have a goal, it’s like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.  So as Christians it’s important that we practice trusting in our Lord, our Coach.  I can remember now as I stand at the starting line ready to race.  My nerves were always so tore up because I always was under pressure but in a good way, and as you know I’m very competitive, so I always ran to win!  I normally ran the one mile or two miles so either four or eight laps, it always got so boring.  I was not a sprinter but had the endurance for long distance.  I would shoot out in front to take the lead and would keep a steady pace not to overdue myself.  As I approached the last lap I’d step up my pace to finish the race strong.  It’s so easy for me to relate life to a race.  As a runner you face challenges and obstacles throughout the race. In cross country we had to run up steep hills and inclines, run through the dirt paths with rocks and rubble and as Christians we run this race every day facing the same challenges and obstacles that we have to overcome.  We may sweat a little and struggle to finish the race but at the end of the day if we persevere and stay true to ourselves and our Lord leading us, there is no hill or mountain that we can’t climb and we will ultimately reach that finish line.  Walking with God is going to be an uphill climb, so we must pace ourselves along the way so that we can strengthen our spiritual muscles.  It’s important that we set our goals and know what’s waiting for us at the finish line because then we can work harder and stronger.  Our ultimate goal is to finish the race and to run through the finish line at Heaven’s gates and know that we ran our best race!  In Romans chapter 5 verse 3 “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.” We can apply this verse to our race because it’s our obstacles, trials and tribulations that make us who we are.  I think about our family members, loved ones, and friends that I’ve lost over the years and think of their races, some were short almost like a sprint and others like my grandmother a marathon.  I hope that each of us can get our running shoes ready and run for the Lord so we can all cross that finish line one day and know that we ran a good race!  So put on your running shoes and run for God because he’s cheering you on along the way!!! So I’ll leave you with this Hebrews Chapter 12 verse 1Let us run with endurance the race God has set before us”.

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." ~Dr. Seuss

"Graduation is the beginning of knowing who you are, what you are, why you are, and always knowing where you are going."
When I think back to my high school graduation, I can remember thinking to myself wow in just a few months I will be off to College and the future is in my hands.  College was a big word that scared me but was an open door to experience the world and get a quick taste of what life had to offer me!  I got accepted to UNCW and without a doubt chose to receive my education close by the beach.  I heard if you live close to the beach you learn better (Ok I made that up but I am confident it is true).  I chose UNCW not because it is close by the beach although that is a perk, not because it was close enough to home that if I needed to come home I could, but I chose UNCW because it gave me this feeling of comfort, this feeling of warmth and growth, a feeling of inspiration and encouragement, a feeling of confidence, and most importantly instantly felt like my "home away from home".  UNCWonderful as someone described UNCW is exactly what this university is.  Wonderful what a way to describe a place where you can grow, learn about yourself, make life-long friendships, connect and network with professionals, explore your inner-self, take risks, get involved, study abroad, give back to the community, experience the wonderful city of Wilmington, and receive an education that will take you so far in life!

As I look back now to my first day at UNCW, I had no clue what this chapter would be titled and how it would end but I can say that I am ready to turn the page and start reading the next chapter.  My time here at UNCW is coming to end on Saturday at 9:30 AM.  I will walk across that stage and will become a college graduate, something I have dreamed of doing and didn't know it would get here so quick.  I have been involved with numerous organizations, volunteered at Holly Tree Elementary school, worked as an Involvement Specialist at CAIC, worked as a Peer Mentor for freshmen, was the winner of an awesome dance competition "Hawk It Out", was a part of the Dance Company, and even competed for the ultimate title of Miss Greater Wilmington ( a scholarship pageant through the Miss America Program).  As I look back to all of the different pieces of my life I am so blessed to have been  a small part of so many big things!  They each have shaped me into a better, well-rounded individual and have given me a feeling of community and something I can look back on years from now and know that I left my footprints in the sand here!  Even though the waves of the ocean eventually wash the footprints away I know that they are implemented in the sand and will always have a place in my heart.  The treasures I have discovered here are like seashells in the sand, sometimes you find cracked or broken seashells but when you find those perfect ones they are the ones you hold onto and treasure for life!

As I share my Graduation day with so many friends and family Saturday, I know that this not an ending, maybe an ending to this chapter but the start of a new chapter that I hope to continue to share with others!  Although this next step in my life is scary and the world is such a big, scary place I know that with God by my side anything is possible.  The strength that I have because of him is so powerful and keeps me going every day.  My ultimate goal in life is to glorify God and share his love with everyone!

Good luck class of 2011 and start living your life :)

ABC Family Original Movie "Teen Spirit"

Teen Spirit set to air August 7th on ABC Family.  Be sure to tune in you may just see me along with some of the posse!  Starring Lindsey Shaw from "Pretty Little Liars" and Cassie Scerbo from "Make It or Break It".  I went back to highschool and boy what a fun time we all had from re-living highschool prom, hanging out  with the posse, and going back to school, it was a fun and memorable adventure!  The friendships that we made over those few weeks will last a lifetime, its kind of hard when you spend 10-12 hours a day with people, that you don't end up becoming good friends with them!!

You can check out ABC Family's website to learn more about the movie! http://abcfamily.go.com/movies/teen-spirit

We are part of the "A-Team" in the movie so when you hear talk about the "A-Team" be sure to look for us!  It will be so much fun watching the movie and seeing so many familiar faces :)

You may also spot this flyer throughout the movie.

“It’s beauty that captures your attention;personality which captures your heart.”

I've always dreamed of competing on that Miss America stage.  I can remember watching it as a little girl and dreaming of one day being on that stage with family and friends all over the nation watching me as I competed for the title of Miss America.  Although that is a very BIG dream, I know that this past weekend got me one step closer to that dream.

Although my ultimate goal this weekend was to win Miss Greater Wilmington, I think I accomplished way more than that.  Sometimes its not always about winning that crown but taking every ounce of the experience and somehow applying it to your life.  I was able by the glory of God to win talent with my upbeat clogging routine last night.  God has blessed with me with the ability to clog and I would have to give my mom credit for it too!!  It meant so much to win talent, I have worked so hard and spent numerous hours in the studio practicing my dance.  As 1st runner up I was thrilled to have accomplished so much and to have done so good for my first Miss Preliminary!  God obviously has a different plan for me and although it is hard to see that right now I know he show me the way.

A lot of girls don't know exactly what the Miss America Program is all about and I think its important that people know the community involvement, the platforms, the commitment and time that these young ladies put into their titles.  Being a beauty queen is not exactly what you might think it is.  Being a beauty queen goes beyond whats on the outside, its about having a beautiful inner beauty that shines through.  Its about being passionate about something you want to make others aware about, its about committing yourself to your job, and being a role model for little girls once like me, who watch you on tv, and want to grow up to be just like you!

"Beauty is what you feel about yourself not what you see in the mirror"  Let your true inner beauty shine!

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Where do I even begin??  Can't believe the last time I was here was before Christmas.  I'll start with a New Year in a different country, Europe :)  What an AMAZING experience...I want to travel more!!  This was just a taste of what the world has to offer.  I met some wonderful travel friends, who I hope to meet up and travel with again; I got to experience bringing in the New Year in London, what a memorable night and one I will never be able to forget!! London was by far my favorite part of  the trip, we were there for a week and in that one week we did every possible thing you could imagine!  My highlights were: Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, the amazing Pubs, eating Fish and Chips, and just the fun city life!!!!  Also being able to sit in on a Church Service at St. Paul's Cathedral where Princess Diana got married was a moment that really touched my heart and gave me a feeling that words can't even begin to express.   Also while we were there we visited Businesses everyday as well.  Lloyd's of London was a very unique Business.  The structure and the way it was built showed how creative of a business it was.  Everywhere we went as a group, it must have been the clothes we wore or the way we walked but it was obvious that we were Americans!  Which at first was scary but everyone in London seemed to love Americans!!! I met an Italian, who was amazed and very jealous because we lived in the states and he wanted to move to New York so bad.  We told him we would trade places and  move to Italy.  They say the food there is just breathtaking :)  I will have to say that when you travel you really do learn more about yourself and really learn to appreciate what you have at home, your family, friends, etc. much more.  One thing I had trouble with was not being able to order tap water, which here I do on a regular basis.  I know there are many things I left out from London but there is just not enough room to put everything.

Our next adventure was off to Belgium, where the waffles are absolutely the BEST waffles you will ever taste in your life.  I would have to say Belgium had about the best food, the restaurants there were so unique but they had such a variety of food.  I ate Mussels and Fries at a cute restaurant with some friends and we absolutely loved it!  In Belgium the buildings were built in such a distinctive but elegant way that you couldn't take your eyes off of them.  Prior to our trip I did research on the Bank of Belgium which we visited the few days that we were there.

After our time in Belgium we visited our last destination the BEAUTIFUL Paris!  What a magnificent City :)  Of course one of my favorite foods in Paris was a Crepe with Nutella, ahh that was absolutely GREAT!!! Probably the highlight of our entire trip was being able to go up the Eiffel Tower!  That has always been on my bucketlist of things to do and I am so thankful that I was able to check it off.  If there is one thing that everyone needs to do in there lifetime I think its seeing the Eiffel Tower, what a remarkable creation and being able to look out and see what a beautiful city Paris is!!!  I was sad when I left Europe but was also very excited to get home, seeing my parents at the airport to pick me up was definitely a great feeling!  I really did miss being home and with family.  This was the first chapter to my traveling experiences and I hope to have many more. If I'm able to travel again I would without a doubt travel to Italy and Greece next.  They are two beautiful places and I would just love to experience being there!!!

"The Best of Times is Now"

WOW!! This week has flown by, or should I say December has flown by.  This time of the year is just so busy that it seems to get here and then its gone by the snap of a finger.

I've really learned a lot about myself and who I am these last few weeks that I've been home and had some time to myself.  Sometimes you get so caught up everything thats going on with everyone else's lives that you forget what it is you want.  I know I do that a lot and its so easy to do but its important that we as human beings remember to ask ourselves "well what is it we really want out of life?"  Life comes and goes way to quickly to not focus on what you want out of life.

One thing that I've really focused on lately is making God the center of my life.  I know that I can come to God for anything and he can get me through anything but I have to follow his plan and do the work that he has set out for me.

Another thing I've learned while on my break is I have some AMAZING friendships that I have built over the years.  I hate that there are not enough hours in the day or enough days in the week to see everyone and hangout with everyone but as long as I can keep in contact with my friends and see them as much as I possibly can, I know that I will have these friends forever because thats just the kind of people they are!!!!

Here is a picture of my best friends at our Christmas Gift Exchange/ Dinner/Movie Night!!!
We are a crazy bunch when we are together, but we're always happy when we all get together!!

FAMILY
Well what can I say besides the fact that I love my family so much and they are always here for me through thick and thin!!  Family is about being there for one another and loving one another!  I am blessed beyond words.

Can't belive tomorrow night is Christmas Eve!!  Excited to have the family over for a special Christmas get-together!

Christmas is in 2 days and I leave 4 days from today for my Trip!!

Have a blessed and Merry Christmas!!!

LOL

I always LOVE Christmas break!  There are always so many exciting events and things going on everywhere.  I really enjoy the part where I can sleep in, this doesn't happen in Wilmington since I decided to take 8 AM classes... Yesterday I started my day off with a trip to the gym early in the morning.  My day doesn't feel right or complete if I haven't ran.  There is just something about running that gives me this AMAZING feeling.  I am very passionate about running and staying in shape, I hope to still be running at an old age!

After the workout and spending some time at home my family and I went to my twin cousin's 2nd birthday party, YES they are two twin girls and they are absolutely precious!!  Morgan reminds me of my cousin Megan when I use to babysit her as a baby.  Megan and I have a lot of precious memories together!  I love her so much and enjoy the little time that we are able to spend together.  My cousin Jessica was at the party yesterday too, we do love taking us some pictures hahaha!!!  I love all of my cousins so much and enjoy every minute I spend with them!  It was so nice spending time with my family! I have learned one thing through my lifetime that no matter what, your family is always going to be there for you and love you!  What a great feeling knowing that you are blessed with wonderful people to surround your life.  They all mean so much to me.
I also had a lot of fun last night with some great friends!!  Olivia, Daniel, and Matt (some of my great friends from high school) and myself all went out to a comedy club last night and hung out.  We had the best time and the comedy club I will have to admit was pretty funny!  I did laught out loud, p.s. the name of the club was LOL!!! hehe I thought that was funny!  We all had such a great time though and enjoyed catching up with each other.  Its always a good time when your in Johnston County.  Olivia stayed with me last night and we had such a good time catching up and laughing about our funny, crazy, and wonderful memories from our cruise we took last summer!  Olivia is one of my closest friends from high school, I am so blessed to have great friends!

Tonight my mom and me went to our Church Christmas Program, I always enjoy going to this each year.  Its so nice to think about the true reason for the season and the birth of baby Jesus!  I loved the play and catching up with some great Church friends!

What a great weekend!!!
